Rock Music Video Analysis
Rock Music Video Analysis
For the analysis I'll be choosing the music video from Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams which follows a punk rock genre as it does for most of their music.
Overlooking the whole music video it consistently displays itself as looking quite 'grunge-like' as it uses really grey and dark tones thorough the colour key's, this combined with frequent visual effects of this dirt scratched effect that's used in combination makes it look almost depressing. If we take away all audio we can see it's almost portraying the the world just moving around him leaving him behind and alone.
Which if we tie this in with the audio it presents itself as a whole picture of him talking about being alone and walking the never-ending streets of New York.
Scenes within the music video represent this idea even further with him walking through many different places from the desert to random ruins and neighbour hoods generally all in fast succession showing the time this has been going on for. To tie in even further there are also small additions such as the crow representing the subtle idea's of death. If we change the desert almost a metaphor for his mind then the desert can be interpreted as his mental state and the crow as the over looming idea of giving up.
Finally there is almost a light moment or a difference of when he is directly playing the music in a band showing a vast difference of him not walking alone and creating music together representing that everything can get better. It represents him breaking away from his cycle of walking (which represents his everlasting depression as a repetitive cycle). Towards the end the end of the music video all of the elements previously flash through frantically showing everything up to this point.
Overall the music video sticks to simple editing such as simple fast cuts and jump cuts with some grunge-like video effects but comes off effective due to the message of the song itself revolving around depression and a monotonous theme.
